Getting to know Alice Ridley
Rhapsody
E-Music
I have seen her personally several times, by chance, and it changed my entire subway trip everytime - where and why I was going, and my whole attitude. It’s partly because of the accoustics (not that she needs them), but the underground transit system is instantly transformed into a Cathedral of the “Church of All of Us Together”. She admits herself, “If I was in a club, would you have heard me? Just be thankful I’m not in a club.”
She sings the soul classics like Gladys Knight and the Pips’ “Midnight Train to Georgia”, appropriately shown in this subway performance, all better than the artists themselves ever did! There is no one standing remotely near that is not forced to feel something. There are many YouTube videos of Ms. Ridley, some tourists may not know her name, but we do. And we thank her.

This woman sings with all her heart and soul! Inspirational! Loved your article Leah. Espeacially the “church” anaolgy. Good writng. Hope I run across her during my stay and experience Alice live to see if she is better than Gladys! Guess who?
Alice is one of the best singers alive, and I can’t — for the life of me — understand why this magnificent, soulful singer doesn’t have a recording contract, why she isn’t singing onstage, why she isn’t a star.
